"Togo sofa, chrome countertops, pharmacy-style soap bottles…What defines the aesthetics of the 2020’s and how will we recognize it in the future?"
✷ Zeit Magazin commissioned two covers and four full-page illustrations for their issue on the design aesthetics of the 2020s. It was with an open brief and an idea of an alien encountering the decade's visual culture for the first time.
I wanted the six pieces to function like a single storyline - with an alien as a main character. I imagined it would bring a lot of humour into the work. The reader would be strolling past chrome countertops and wavy mirrors, while experiencing the absurdity of our era's aesthetic obsessions through the alien's eyes.
I started with a research into Gen Z interior and design trends, which, as someone living among them, came fairly naturally. From that visual world I developed the main character and all the props from scratch, designing and modelling everything to feel cohesive across all six pieces.
